Colnago eGRV GRX Di2 Cyclist Off-Road's best e-gravel bikes

7 Aug 2020

With so much innovation in bikes, it can sometimes feel like cycling is leaving behind its core values. Yet the arrival of e-bikes offers us a chance to reboot, a reminder of the sheer enjoyment of being outdoors and exploring on two wheels. In this series we focus on some of the most prominent e-gravel bikes on the market

Given its extensive racing heritage and reputation for tradition, Colnago is not a brand that immediately springs to mind as a natural fit in either the gravel or e-bike markets.

Yet it is also a brand that prides itself on innovation, which explains its new eGRV e-gravel bike. Colnago’s Alessandro Turci sees gravel, and more specifically e-gravel, as an exciting opportunity that the company has approached with typical Italian passion.

‘The eGRV is a true Colnago, and the project was approached and executed with the same dedication as any of our more conventional concepts,’ he says.

Much like Colnago’s e-road bike, the E64, the eGRV uses ebikemotion’s X35 drive system. The X35 motor uses a power meter and magnets in the cassette lockring to support the output of the rider, delivering up to 250 extra watts over a range as far as 100km.

The rear hub-based motor pairs with a battery small enough to be housed in the down tube and a control button situated on the top tube. That and the charge port on top of the bottom bracket junction are the only real giveaways the eGRV is not just the brand’s conventional G3x gravel bike in a different colour.

Turci says this was imperative to making the eGRV part of Colnago’s ‘Evoluzione’ project, which aims to homogenise the look and feel of the brand’s bikes, regardless of whether they have a motor or not.

With gravel-specific geometric tweaks – such as a longer reach, paired with a shorter stem and a lower bottom bracket – Colnago aims to preserve enough of the reactive ride feel that its road bikes are famed for while delivering ample stability to tackle the rough stuff with confidence.

Shimano’s GRX gravel groupset and Panaracer’s versatile GravelKing tyres round off a truly classy looking package. But it is Italian, so what did you expect?
