Trek Domane+ LT: Cyclist Off-Road's best e-gravel bikes

6 Aug 2020

With so much innovation in bikes, it can sometimes feel like cycling is leaving behind its core values. Yet the arrival of e-bikes offers us a chance to reboot, a reminder of the sheer enjoyment of being outdoors and exploring on two wheels. In this series we focus on some of the most prominent e-gravel bikes on the market

The original Trek Domane, first launched in 2012, redefined the endurance road market and has been a leading light in this sector ever since.

So it comes as no surprise that its electronic sibling is one of the most impressive e-bikes money can buy, and the setup Trek has gone for means it’s ripe for gravel riding too.

Trek has replicated much of what is good about the Domane road bike in the Domane+ LT. Firstly, there’s Trek’s pioneering Isospeed, a pivoting decoupler that delivers compliance at both the front and rear of the bike without compromising the lateral rigidity that’s crucial for performance and control.

The rear Isospeed is adjustable too, allowing the rider to tailor how much flex it offers according to bodyweight, riding preferences and terrain.

The Domane’s proven shock-absorbing capabilities are paired with 700x32mm Bontrager R3 Hard Case tubeless tyres, plus slacker geometry and a little extra head tube height to ensure stability and comfort.

The frame itself is constructed from Trek’s 500 series OCLV carbon, which walks the tightrope between strong and comfortable on rough surfaces while also remaining light and stiff to ensure a lively, zippy feel.

The electronic assistance is provided by a Fazua Evation motor that can supply up to 250W of assistive thrust, with the power controlled by a handlebar-mounted remote or via a smartphone app.

With the removable battery concealed neatly in the down tube and with the whole drive unit weighing just 2.9kg, the +LT retains a lot of the look and feel of the traditional Domane road bike.

An overall claimed weight of 14.7kg (for a size medium), plus the fact that Trek says you won’t feel much drag or resistance when the motor is off, means you will probably forget you a riding an e-bike and think you just have good legs on every ride.
