The power of movement: Raleigh’s Motus has no boundaries

Raleigh’s updated Motus e-bike range is the perfect platform to spread the joy of cycling

There are bike brands and then there’s Raleigh. Raleigh is cycling history, not just in the UK but globally, with its legacy as once the world’s largest bike manufacturer, the sponsor of one of the great pro teams in TI-Raleigh and the creator of some of the most iconic bicycles ever made like the Chopper.

Although it’s taken a step back from road cycling and the professional scene, Raleigh continues to make all kinds of bikes for all kinds of people.

With the goal of spreading the joy of cycling, whether that be in commuting or just riding for pleasure, Raleigh has focussed on maximising the accessibility of its range so that everyone can ride bikes and have fun doing so.

There’s no better symbol of that than with its Motus electric bike range, which has just been given an exciting update for 2022.

Motus of transport

First launched in 2015, Motus – which is the Latin word for movement – is Raleigh’s range of hybrid electric bikes and is actually the brand’s best-selling e-bike.

Built to emphasise comfort above all at affordable prices, it’s one that can be enjoyed by anyone and everyone and excels equally in cities and along country lanes.

For this year, Motus has been revitalised with three models: Motus, Motus Tour and Motus Grand Tour.

All fully equipped hybrids, each features a Bosch Active Line or Active Line Plus motor, a choice between a step-through 'low-step' frame and 'crossbar' diamond frame, and a range of sizes and striking colourways

The standard Motus is priced at £2,199 and is built with an external 400Wh Bosch battery – sitting on the down tube for the crossbar option and seat tube for the low-step option – meaning that you could actually ride it like a non-electric bike without lugging the weight of a battery around if you wanted to.

It’s kitted out with a Bosch Purion display showing speed, battery life and remaining range alongside a rear rack, mudguards, hydraulic disc brakes, a suspension fork with 56mm of travel, 700×42c tyres with a reflective stripe and double duty puncture protection, an adjustable stem, and a 7-speed drivetrain with an 11-34 cassette.

The Motus Tour and Grand Tour take things a bit further with Bosch’s compact PowerTube batteries integrated into the down tube, front and rear integrated lights, a built-in wheel lock to help keep thieves away, and a choice between derailleur and hub gears, the latter reducing the level of maintenance required.

The Tour features all the best bits of the Motus too, including the front suspension, adjustable stem, hydraulic disc brakes and wide tyres, with the Tour Plus models boasting wider tyres still.

The Tour levels up slightly compared to the base model, costing £2,499 and £2,599 for derailleur and hub options respectively. Both feature the Bosch Intuvia display and 8-speed gearing over the same range for the derailleur version – meaning you’ll have more closely spaced gears to match what your legs and the route demands. The hub gear version sports 7-speed Shimano Nexus gearing with a 22t sprocket.

The Motus Grand Tour – as you’d expect – takes the platform a bit further still with 9-speed gearing on the derailleur-equipped bike and a 20 per cent more powerful 500Wh PowerTube battery alongside the wide tyres, hydraulic disc brakes, integrated lights, front suspension, Intuvia display and adjustable stem.

The hub option retains the 7-speed, 22t Nexus gearing and is priced at £2,799, while the derailleur-equipped bike will set you back £2,699.

Having a bike like the Motus means that all local journeys can be done by bike, allowing you to leave a life of costly, sheltered and polluting transport behind and embrace the great outdoors.

You don’t even have to break a sweat. Motus is accessibility to a T with incredible versatility meaning all kinds of cyclist can ride it and love it, whether powering through the city or gliding through the countryside.
