After a fierce start to get into the breakaway and riding through blazing heat, Michael Matthews secured Team BikeExchange's second victory at the 2022 Tour de France

Matthews previously noted that his move back to the team felt like 'coming home', and he came good today with his first Tour win in five years.

Initially dropped by Matthews with 3km to the line, Alberto Bettiol (EF Education-EasyPost) battled back and even rode past his rival, distancing him in the process.

But Matthews didn't give up despite looking at his limit. He climbed past Bettiol on the 10.2% category two final ramp and stayed away to celebrate his win.

Behind, Thibaut Pinot shook off reminants of the chasing group to finish third on the day.

Neither the yellow jersey Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) nor Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates) could put time into the other, and the duo arrived at the line together, Vingegaard glued doggedly to the Slovenian's wheel.

At the time of writing, Lotto-Soudal's Caleb Ewan – who crashed on yesterday's stage – has yet to finish, having been dropped almost from the start in Saint-Étienne.

It was a blistering hot day at the Tour.

The large breakaway pulled out a hefty chunk of time over the peloton.

Thibaut Pinot was in the mix, ultimately holding on for third place.

We feel sunstroked just looking at Louis Meintjes in his minimally vented aero road helmet.

Vingegaard successfully defended his grip on yellow for another day.

Matthews fought hard for his win today.
