Orbea Terra H: Handsome aluminium gravel bike offers mounts and versatility

Three aluminium Terra models offer an easier way into gravel with prices from £1,999

Orbea has expanded its Terra gravel bike range to include a set of aluminium-framed models under the name Terra H, with prices for complete bikes starting at £1,999 for a bike with 10-speed Shimano GRX components

The Basque brand’s Terra platform was relaunched in November last year with a more relaxed gravel-specific geometry and mounts for various accessories. Now three aluminium models have launched alongside the carbon range.

The Terra H’s geometry is almost identical to the carbon version’s with a slightly lengthened wheelbase to help add stability both on- and off-road.

Mix-and-match Shimano groupsets and own-brand wheels brings the prices down, while the Terra H frames are hydroformed triple butted aluminium – that’s where the ‘H’ comes from – and are partnered with carbon forks to help minimise weight.

The new builds are the Terra H30 (£2,299), Terra H30 1× (£2,199) and Terra H40 (£1,999).

Orbea Terra H 2022: Features and frames

Orbea has stuck largely to same script that came with the carbon Terra’s recent update, that this is a gravel bike that performs well on the road, is comfortable on gravel and has bikepacking capability.

The latter is one area in which the Terra H separates itself somewhat, with additional mounting points for a rear rack, on top of the mudguard and three bottle cage mounts of the carbon models.

There’s capacity for both 1× and 2× drivetrains on all models – the latter with a small chainring up to 34-tooth – thanks to the asymmetrical chainstays.

Tyre clearance matches that of the carbon options: up to 45mm for 700c and up to 50mm with 650b.

The main change is obviously the materials. While the Terra H retains the same Orbea Terra OMR full-carbon fork, the frame is made from triple-butted, hydroformed aluminium.

Hydroforming is a common metal-shaping method that’s used by many bike manufacturers and involves injecting fluid at high pressures into the tubes to form them into a mould. It’s a cost-effective way of making more complicated shapes that are stronger and more rigid as well as lighter.

‘Triple-butted’ is also a term you’ll see across the industry and means the aluminium tubes have three different thickness at various points along the structure. Thicker sections maintain strength around joints and thinner sections are used to save weight elsewhere while a middle section aids the transition between the two.

Orbea Terra H 2022: Geometry

Although the Terra H’s geometry is mostly identical to the existing Terra models, there are a couple of small tweaks.

Most noteworthy is the wheelbase, which is about a centimetre longer due to extended chainstays. Orbea shortened those in the 2021 redesign though and stills boasts of the faster acceleration that comes from their reduced length.

On the whole, the geometry has been designed to emphasise comfort and precise off-road handling with the 2021 redesign bringing a longer top tube, shorter stem and longer wheelbase than the previous generation’s more road-like figures.
